San Diego County CA— United Way of San Diego County’s first annual ‘Changing the Odds Community Breakfast’ will gather hundreds of community partners, local businesses and allies to help children be successful both inside and outside the classroom.
Attendees at the Wednesday, May 10, 2017 event will hear from keynote speaker Liz Murray, author of “Breaking Night,” whose journey from homeless teen to Harvard graduate is a triumph over adversity and of the importance of dreaming big. The event’s honorary chair is San Diego First Lady Katherine Stuart Faulconer, founding president of Restaurant Events and wife to Mayor Kevin Faulconer.
For 97 years, United Way has been working to disrupt the cycle of poverty and provide resources for underserved San Diegans to become self-sufficient, creating better lives for local children and their families.

Notable scheduled attendees include Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Sheriff Bill Gore, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis and several members of the San Diego City Council.
Keynote: Liz Murray, homeless to Harvard author of “Breaking Night.” Mayor Faulconer will give brief remarks.

Seven scholarships, presented by United Way’s Women’s Leadership Council, will be awarded to graduating seniors who created videos about how they give back to the community and why. The top two will be shown at the breakfast.
The Hoover High Jazz Band will be performing between 7-8 a.m.
The cost is $75 for individual tickets. Open to the public. Tables of 10 start at $750.
