San Diego County’s Allgire General Contractors established a nonprofit foundation at the onset of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders in 2020 to further assist people who live in affordable housing communities; Today, Allgire Foundation expands community giving with academic scholarships and fundraising festivities this Spring along with plans to officially celebrate community achievements and to honor Rick and Mary Ann Allgire
San Diego CA— San Diego’s Allgire General Contractors (AGC) has been building affordable housing communities all over San Diego County for over 30 years. They have seen firsthand that when residents move into their new apartments, they often lack the basics needed for a new home. Driven by their desire to fill these needs and to honor AGC founders, Rick and Mary Ann Allgire’s legacy of community support, AGC employees created the Allgire Foundation.
The Allgire Foundation was established in March 2020, right before the statewide COVID-19 closures. The unexpected pandemic put a pin on the foundation’s original intent on a formal public-facing launch of the nonprofit, to celebrate Rick and Mary Ann’s retirement, and to officially announce the succession of their son Grant Allgire as CEO of Allgire General Contractors in Carlsbad, Calif., but they remained steadfast in continuing their work of giving back to the community.
With a pandemic at hand, seniors with comprised health conditions afraid to leave their homes, unemployment on the rise, and an evident increase in unhoused families, Allgire Foundation officials realized more than ever, there was a much larger gap in needs to fill. They moved quickly to help secure food for seniors delivering it to their doorstep and bagged essentials for thousands of families in need.
For nearly two years, the Allgire Foundation has quietly continued to help people through their own funds and resources and with no overhead expense. Every dollar is spent one hundred percent on helping San Diego County families. During this especially difficult time, they have provided more than 35,000 people in over 100 different affordable housing communities in San Diego County with food and care packages that have included basic hygiene essentials to move-in items like pots and pans, trash bins, utensils and everything needed for residents to be move-in ready and call their new place home.
Allgire Foundation’s Generosity Blossoms This Spring
In 2022, the Allgire Foundation is extending its strategic philanthropy to reach more individuals through a new educational scholarship initiative, a massive community service event to create thousands of care packages, and an inaugural fundraising gala. Foundation organizers hope to harness the generosity of the business, real estate, and developer communities to bolster support for residents in affordable housing communities in our region.
“We established the Allgire Foundation almost two years ago to try and fill some voids that we noticed existed in the affordable housing community where Allgire General Contractors has built apartment residences for the last 30 years,” says Scott Silber, Executive Director, Allgire Foundation. “We’re still a young organization but we have big plans.”
“Transforming Lives Through Education”
Allgire Foundation’s scholarship program, ‘Transforming Lives Through Education,’ will further help families with funds for college-bound students living in affordable housing communities or who have a desire to make a positive impact in affordable housing communities. There are various scholarships available, named after company founders and extended family members. Scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee made up of Allgire Foundation representatives, additional family members, and AGC employees. Applications are being accepted through February 25, 2022 at www.allgirefoundation.org/scholoarships.
Allgire Foundation Rallies the Community to Create Thousands of Care Packages
Members of the Allgire Foundation are organizing their first-ever “Spring Harvest” event on Sunday, March 20. More than 150 volunteers from Allgire General Contractors, its trade partners, local affordable housing developers, and families and friends will package fruits and vegetables from local farmers. In just one day, volunteers will bundle 10,000 care packages to support residents of affordable housing communities with healthy options. These will be delivered to their doorsteps across San Diego County, March 21-23 by Allgire Foundation representatives. “Eating healthy can be extremely costly and difficult,” says Silber. “The Allgire Foundation strongly believes that no event is too small to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”
Art, Wine, and Adventure Gala is April 23
As it feels safer to gather and celebrate as a group, the Allgire Foundation will finally commemorate their tremendous community outreach efforts through a gala on April 23 in Downtown San Diego. Organizers hope to raise $500,000 to help bring them closer to their goal of helping more families in need and provide continued support for their scholarship program and prepare even more care packages for local seniors and families. “While Allgire General Contractors provides a backbone of support for the Allgire Foundation using the company’s existing operations to eliminate overhead and administrative costs and both company and staff have provided other donations, raising additional funds from our community partners and individuals will help increase the impact to support more people and grow the foundation,” explained Silber.
The gala will be extra special, as the inaugural recipients of the Allgire Foundation Scholarship will be announced and guests at the invite-only event will be able to celebrate Rick and Mary Ann Allgire’s community legacy.
