Virtual Event Occurs June 4 to Support Families with Hospitalized Children
San Diego CA— Through its GEICO Cares initiative, auto insurance company GEICO established a matching campaign for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego’s Red Shoe Day fundraiser, helping the organization to raise more than $11,000 before the June 4 virtual event.
For more than 10 years, GEICO has been a supporter of San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House and its Red Shoe Day fundraiser. Prior to this year, GEICO employees volunteered at intersections carrying the iconic red shoes to collect donations during the morning commute. Due to the current social distancing restrictions, instead of collecting cash at intersections GEICO established a $5,000 matching gift to jumpstart proceeds for this year’s virtual fundraiser and San Diegans donated an additional $6,000.
“Upon the start of our partnership 10 years ago, we immediately felt a connection to the mission and services of San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House,” said Greg Jacobi, regional vice president at GEICO. “GEICO’s longtime support includes not just fundraising, but also our associates serving meals to families several times a year and donating vehicles to families staying there. We see the positive impact the House has on families with a critically ill or injured child — and we’re proud to be part of that community.”
Red Shoe Day raises funds for San Diego’s 56-bedroom Ronald McDonald House, which provides a “home-away-from-home” for families with a critically ill or injured child in a local hospital. Proceeds from the fundraiser help the organization provide services – including lodging, meals and emotional support – to families as they care for their hospitalized child. Each year, more than 15,000 family members access services at the Ronald McDonald House.
“While our world looks different today than it did just a few months ago, the need to care for our region’s most critically ill children hasn’t stopped, nor does the work we do at San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House,” said Chuck Day, president and CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego. “We’re grateful for the continued support of our corporate partners, like GEICO, and their generous team members.”
