San Diego CA—To salute Black History Month, Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation‘s Jacobs Presents has assembled a robust lineup of free events celebrating local African-American artists including a Netflix filmmaker and popular theatre production group.
The event schedule includes:
African-American Women in Film | Tuesday, Feb. 25, 6:30 p.m.
The evening of film includes excerpts from Netflix’s “Never Heard” by local filmmaker Tamera Hill and a screening of the short film “Together,” featuring Efé, winner of 2019 D.C. Black Film Festival Actress of the Year award. “Never Heard” tells the story of a father who is incarcerated for a crime he swears he did not commit, and his son who is lured into Los Angeles’ ruthless drug world and forced to choose between God or gangs. Common Ground Theater’s “Little Rock” | Sunday, Feb. 29, 4 p.m.
A preview production of “Little Rock,” a play based on the plight of the Little Rock Nine, directed by Yolanda Franklin. “Little Rock” tells the true story of the nine black students who integrated into the previously all-white Little Rock Central High School in 1957. The play honors the bravery of the students and highlights how they suffered and what they ultimately achieved. RSVP requested, not required at commongroundlittlerock.eventbrite.com.
“We created this free event series with the community in mind,” said Jacobs Center President and CEO Reginald Jones. “It blends thought-provoking films, soulful music and a historically significant production – all featuring talented members of San Diego’s celebrated African-American community.”
The event series is hosted by Jacobs Presents, with additional event support services from Kitchens for Good, a San Diego nonprofit that equips individuals with culinary skills they need to launch meaningful careers and make a positive impact in their communities.
