Oceanside CA— Over 600 participants will join together at the annual Relay For Life of Oceanside at MiraCosta College to help the American Cancer Society attack cancer from every angle. The event starts at 10am on Saturday, April 6, 2019 and runs for a full 24 hours symbolizing that cancer never sleeps.
“Relay is 24 hours of family, friends and the community coming together to fight back against a disease that has touched each one of us. I came to my first Relay over 15 years ago with my then 12-year-old daughter and the luminaria ceremony left a lasting impression on us” said Tina Ortiz, this year’s Event Lead. “When my husband was diagnosed in 1999, we didn’t know about the services of the American Cancer Society and often times felt alone. Relay has become my way of fighting back and helping others so they do not feel alone. To see the Oceanside community come together to celebrate Survivors and Caregivers and to remember friends and family is truly special. Everyone walks together, many of us touched by cancer. We all want the same thing…to find a cure.” Tina Ortiz and her daughter, Brianna, relay on a team of family & friends started in memory of her husband who passed away from colon cancer in 2001.
The American Cancer Society is the cause fighting cancer on every front; standing shoulder to shoulder with cancer patients and those supporting them. Funds raised help the American Cancer Society attack cancer in dozens of ways, each of them critical to achieving a world without cancer – from developing breakthrough therapies to building supportive communities, from providing empowering resources to deploying activists to raise awareness.
Founded by Dr. Gordy Klatt in Washington in 1985, the Relay For Life movement unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have been touched by cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action for lifesaving change. Symbolizing the battle waged around the clock by those facing cancer, the event can last up to 24 hours and empowers communities to take a stand against cancer.
In addition to the support of the community, Relay For Life of Oceanside is also supported by many local businesses and organizations. This year’s sponsors include: Genentech, Audio Services Live!, CRB, DPR Construction, Dynalectric San Diego, Frontwave Credit Union, Nelson Mejia PartyDJs4U, Kiwanis Club of Oceanside, Murray Company, Siemens, TSS, University Mechanical & Engineering,
