Del Mar CA— Fair food is always a star of the show at the San Diego County Fair, but this year we added a magical rainbow twist!
Since unicorn foods are currently all the rage, we challenged our food vendors to each come up with a unique unicorn-themed food item to offer throughout the run of the Fair. The cherry on top was creating a unicorn food competition, where our vendors faced off with their best unicorn creations for judges to taste.
And the overall winner of the “Best Unicorn Food” at the San Diego County Fair is … Unicorn Nitro Pop from the Candy Factory! This popcorn and cotton candy sweet treat is also part magic, allowing fairgoers to blow nitro vapor out of their mouths and noses like a dragon with every bite.
“We wanted to create something that was whimsical, delicious and colorful to give our Nytro Pop a magical presentation,” said Dominic Palmieri of the Candy Factory and Midway Gourmet who developed and debuted last year’s No. 1 San Diego County Fair food item – Nitro Pop. “I mean, how much sweeter can you make it than encasing Nitro Pop in a giant pillow of cotton candy? So many fairgoers have been looking for it because it’s just so much fun.”
Two unicorn food competition winners were also named in both ‘sweet’ and ‘savory’ categories:

2^nd Place – Chuckwagon’s Deep-Fried Cinnamon Apple Rings with Caramel & Sprinkles

Savory category:

1^st Place – Pignotti’s Gourmet Italian Lasagna Nachos
2^nd Place – Tasti Burger’s Spicy Unicorn Cheese Curd Fries
