Oceanside CA-Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside (BGCO) received $5,000 in grant funding from Southern California Edison (SCE) to enhance their BE GREAT: Graduate mentoring program.
BE GREAT: Graduate works to keep at-risk students from giving up on learning and dropping out of school. The program ensures members have the support they need to reach the academic finish line on time, with a plan for the future. BGCO works individually with students by staying in close contact with their school, tracking their behavior and attendance, and pairing them with a mentor who provides weekly check-ins, support, and encouragement during difficult times.
BGCO focuses on creating a deeply supportive environment that celebrates the successes of its members. On May 9th, BGCO hosted its Third Annual Graduation Celebration at Buffalo Wild Wings. More than 60 graduating seniors were in attendance and each student had a plan for the future. The graduates filled out words of wisdom posters to share with younger Club members. They also shared their plans for after graduation, which included everything from studying forensic biology at Sacramento State to attending Palomar to become a firefighter. Every teen was recognized with a signed grad card, an alumni tee, an inspirational book, a Boys & Girls Clubs of America alumni pin, a backpack, sunglasses, and a thunderous round of applause.
“With help from community partners like Southern California Edison, we are able to be there for our Club members every step of the way and make sure they make it to the finish line,” said Jodi Diamond, CEO. “We are so proud of our graduating seniors and are grateful for partners like Southern California Edison.”
