37th annual Diamond Ball fundraiser benefits lifesaving 3D mammography center
Oceanside CA— Prepare for a night of nonstop laughs when comedian and impressionist Dana Carvey headlines Tri-City Hospital Foundation’s 37th Annual Diamond Ball at Carlsbad’s Omni La Costa Resort & Spa on Sat., Nov. 18, in what is expected to be a sold-out event.
The gala raises funds to bring the most advanced 3D mammography screening technology to Tri-City Medical Center, a community hospital serving North San Diego County.
Dana Carvey, a well-known actor and stand-up comedian, is widely known for being a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” and playing Garth Algar in the “Wayne’s World” films.
“We strive to make each year’s gala fun and memorable,” said Glen Newhart, president of Tri-City Hospital Foundation. “Dana Carvey is an Emmy Award winning actor and comedian, but also a philanthropist who will help us raise funds for our life saving 3D breast cancer screening program.”
Tri-City Medical Center is developing the most comprehensive breast cancer screening and care program in San Diego County, thanks to the generosity of donors of Tri-City Hospital Foundation. Known as 3D tomography, the new system generates a 3D mammogram that can detect between 20 to 65 percent more invasive breast cancers than 2D alone, and is recommended as secondary screening for women with dense breast tissue as it can detect small tumors up to 15 months earlier than traditional mammography alone.
In addition to the 3D mammography system being purchased with funds raised at Diamond Ball, a generous donor underwrote the addition of a radiation-free robotically guided ultrasound-based technology known as the SonoCiné Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound. Tri-City Medical Center is the first facility in San Diego County to offer the SonoCiné. Both of these new breast cancer screening technologies are options for women who require secondary screening, often because they have dense breast tissue.
“More than 70 percent of all breast cancers are discovered in dense breasts,” said diagnostic radiologist Dr. Jennifer Mayberry, co-chair of the gala. “Dense breast tissue appears white on a traditional mammogram image, in the same way as breast cancer does, explaining why women with dense breast tissue often have inconclusive mammograms requiring a second screening.”
Oceanside residents Kevin and Ellen Stotmeister will also be honored with the 2017 Individual Legacy Award at the gala. Through their selfless gift of time and financial contributions, Kevin and Ellen Stotmeister epitomize the true definition of philanthropists.
San Diego Imaging will be honored with the 2017 Group Legacy Award. Over the past 22 consecutive years, SDI has donated generously to support the important work of Tri-City Hospital Foundation.

About Tri-City Hospital Foundation
Tri-City Hospital Foundation is celebrating more than 50 years as a link between the community and the hospital. Since its inception, a generous community of donors have provided millions of dollars in grants to Tri-City Medical Center. Many of the hospital’s most mission-critical facilities have been supported in whole or part by Foundation initiatives and community donors. Recently, the Foundation helped fund the da Vinci XI Surgical System with integrated table motion, making Tri-City Medical Center the only hospital in North San Diego County to have this state-of-the-art system in use for shorter, safer surgeries. The Foundation is currently raising funds to bring lifesaving 3D mammography technology to the hospital to allow for earlier breast cancer detection.
