Set to arrive in Oceanside and Carlsbad Sunday morning
Santa Ana CA— On July 7, 2017, sixteen-year-old Travis Risley embarked on an ambitious journey. He is riding his bicycle from the Oregon/California border to the California/Mexico border in an effort to raise awareness of and funds for the California Peace Officers’ Memorial Foundation (CPOMF).
The approximately 1,000-mile ride kicked off in Brookings, Oregon and will end in San Ysidro, California. Travis is set to leave the Newport Beach Police Department this Sunday, July 23, 2017 around 7:30 a.m. and it is estimated he will arrive in Oceanside around 10:30am. “It’s about 47 miles and he’s been averaging 15 to 19 miles per hour on his ride. Considering he’ll have law enforcement escorting him all the way to Oceanside, he won’t need to stop at any lights.” said a spokesperson for Travis.
“We had a route planned out before the ride began, but we’ve had so much more support from law enforcement agencies in the different areas that we’ve been to, that the route seems to change almost daily. Many agencies have a preferred route or want us to visit their departments. We also want to include any agency or survivor that would like to be included because they are what this ride is about, as Travis has said. If that means stopping at three different agencies in one county, we’ve been making every effort to do that. When that happens, it can extend the day, sometimes by a couple of hours.” said Andrea Risley.
On Friday, July 21, 2017, Travis arrived in Newport Beach where he was greeted with signs, balloons, cheers, cameras and a surprise $5,000 donation from the Association of Orange County Deputy Sheriffs.
This cause that Travis is riding for hits close to home for the Napa teen, as his father is an officer with the Napa Police Department. The Napa Police Officers’ Association is generously covering all of Travis’ expenses, so all donations go directly to the CPOMF.
CPOMF is a nonprofit charitable foundation whose mission is to recognize and honor California’s peace officers who lost their lives in the line of duty and provide support to their surviving family members.
Travis is expected to reach the Mexico border on July 24th.
