Oceanside CA— The Filipino-American Cultural Organization (FACO) will be celebrating its annual Cultural Day on Saturday, June 10, 2017. The event will take place at the Oceanside Civic Center, Plaza and Library located at 330 N Coast Highway in Oceanside, California from 12 noon to 6:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
This year marks the 16^th year the FACO will be celebrating its Annual Filipino Cultural Celebration. True to its theme, “Preserving the Filipino Culture in Modern America”,
you will experience a day full of Philippine folk dancing and music, colorful costumes, special performances from local Filipino-American talents and delicious Filipino and International Cuisine. Special guest performers will include well-known Fil-Am announcer Hula Ramos, celebrity performer Jo Awayan and Feel Some Groove band to set the mood for the public to dance and do their moves!! Other event highlights will include the presentation of the 2017 Mrs. Fil-Am, Little Miss Fil-Am, and Miss Pre-teen Fil-Am candidates and winners. The day will not be complete without the one-hour cultural dance performance of the FACO Cultural Dance Group. FACO’s Maharlika Choir Group will hold its first public engagement! Scholarship grants will also be awarded to deserving Fil-Am high school senior students in North San Diego County and to high school students in the Philippines.
The event also offers all-day crafts and activities for children at the Library’s patio which includes storytelling by two special guests Carol Cabrera and Dorina Gilmore, both are children’s book authors. We also have a magician to entertain the kids and Darna, the Wonder Woman of the Philippines, who will meet the kids for photo shoot and to talk about the heroine. Inside the library will be Philippine handicrafts display and video about Filipino food cooking and history. There will be variety of vendors offering their products and services as well.
Now in existence for almost 40 years, FACO is a 501c(3) non-profit organization whose platform includes youth education, disaster relief, and preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, as well as providing scholarships to Filipinos both in the USA and in the Philippines. In 2013, FACO was a partner in the Adopt-A-School project to rebuild and update classrooms at the University of the Philippines Integrated School. In 2016, FACO, in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Philippines, inaugurated the multi-purpose/learning center building in Tacloban for victims of typhoons Haiyan and Hagupit. FACO is also a donor for the House of the Philippines project in Balboa Park and the Oceanside Public Library. The association is also proud of its cultural programs like providing free Tagalog class and cultural dance lessons to its members and forming its own choir group.
