Oceanside CA— Join the Oceanside Public Library for “American Indians in Literature: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly,” a Native American History Month program, with Dr. Joely Proudfit on Saturday, November 5, at 10:30 a.m., at the Mission Branch Library at 3861-B Mission Avenue, Oceanside, 92058.
Dr. Proudfit will offer critical perspectives and discuss past and current portrayals of American Indians in juvenile, teen and adult literature. Learn to discern between the good, the bad and the ugly! This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library.
Joely Proudfit (Luiseño), Ph.D., is a descendant of the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Mission Indians. Her maternal grandmothers are Lupe Grijalva Guerrero, Refugia Flores Grijalva Zuniga, Candelaria Flores and Juana Hapish, and she is of the Ngeesikat clan. Dr. Proudfit holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in political science, with an emphasis in public policy and American Indian studies, from Northern Arizona University; and a B.A. in political science, with an emphasis in public law, from California State University Long Beach.
As the first member of her family to complete a high school diploma, she serves as a role model for native youth and encourages self-determination through knowledge and education. Dr. Proudfit is one of only a few American Indians with a Ph.D. in political science and was the first recipient of the American Political Science Association Native Fellows Program.
