Carlsbad CA— On Sunday, June 5th, 80-plus hospice volunteers gathered at the Leichtag Foundation property in Encinitas to celebrate the retirement of Jean Cole, Hospice of the North Coast’s (HNC) Resale Shop Manager. For 22 years, Jean worked tirelessly behind the scenes coordinating volunteers and turning discards into treasure to support the mission of Hospice. Jean’s background in retail sales served her well and helped to raise nearly $10 million during her time at the shop. Jean’s celebration was filled with both tears and laughter as she and the volunteers reminisced over unique encounters and experiences that only this type of retail store can attract. Jean’s positive attitude and humor will be missed around the shop.
As Jean begins a new chapter in her life so does the resale shop, welcoming Mary Joe Barry as its new manager. Originally from Philadelphia, and bringing retail experience as both a buyer and manager, Mary Joe first began as a HNC resale shop volunteer 12 years ago. Her Bachelor of Science in Art paid off early when she spotted a pastel that was priced to sell at $3.00. She immediately recognized the artwork as more valuable and, after a little research and price adjustment, the piece ultimately sold for $1,000 on eBay. Mary Joe became a part-time employee of HNC’s resale shop three years ago, and we’re excited that she has accepted the full-time position of resale shop manager.
Hospice of the North Coast Resale Shop is located, 278 N El Camino Real in Encinitas. Store hours are Mon – Sat 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
