Oceanside CA— The Oceanside Public Library is proud to host a series of PBS POV Documentaries as part of a continuing series, Citizen of the World. This series runs January through March on the first Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. and will feature notable documentaries with Civic Reflection discussions to follow. These films will be screened at the Oceanside Public Library second floor Foundation Room at 330 N Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054.
Please join us this Tuesday Feburary 2 for The Storm Makers, a moving film that features brutally candid testimony. The Storm Makers is a chilling exposé of Cambodia’s human trafficking underworld and an eye-opening look at the complex cycle of poverty, despair and greed that fuels this brutal modern slave trade. More than half a million Cambodians work abroad and a staggering third of these have been sold as slaves. Most are young women, held prisoner and forced to work in horrific conditions, sometimes as prostitutes, in Malaysia, Thailand.
On Tuesday March 1, we will be screening Out In the Night. In 2006, under the neon lights of a gay-friendly neighborhood in New York City, a group of African-American lesbians were violently threatened by a man on the street. The women fought back and were later charged with gang assault and attempted murder. The tabloids quickly dubbed them a gang of “Killer Lesbians” and a “Wolf Pack.” Three pleaded guilty to avoid a trial, but the remaining four — Renata, Patreese, Venice and Terrain — maintained their innocence. The award-winning Out in the Night examines the sensational case and the women’s uphill battle, revealing the role that race, gender identity and sexuality play in our criminal justice system.
At Oceanside Public Library we celebrate a diverse Oceanside community and work to awaken a sense of cultural belonging. We also strive to promote Civic Participation and reflection by encouraging dialogue and promoting informed decisions about current issues. PBS Point of View (POV) features independent non-fiction films that highlight social issues. Through working with PBS POV for the Citizen of the World documentary series, Oceanside Public Library is able to expand on those goals.
This free series is sponsored by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library and is a collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV (www.pbs.org/pov). This documentary and discussion will be educational and engaging. For more information, please visit the library’s website at www.oceansidepubliclibrary.org or call (760) 435-5600.
