Carlsbad CA— Calavera Hills Elementary in Carlsbad took home top honors in Cape Rey Carlsbad’s second annual holiday Gingerbread House Contest and has been awarded $350 from the resort. The gingerbread house from Carlsbad’s Hope Elementary earned second place and a $150 prize.
“Cape Rey’s Gingerbread House contest is shaping up to be a fun tradition for local youngsters and a great way for the hotel to celebrate the season of giving,” said Kandice Ward, the resort’s sales and marketing coordinator who organized the contest. “The Cape Rey team was so overwhelmed by the effort from the participating schools and positive public response that we decided to spread a little more holiday cheer by awarding the teacher in charge of the winning gingerbread house with a gift certificate for an overnight stay and breakfast for two.”
The Cape Rey Gingerbread House Contest was held from December 15 through 28 as part of the property’s line-up of seasonal fun and was open to all area elementary schools. Twelve schools submitted original gingerbread house creations for the contest, which were displayed in the hotel lobby for public voting both online and at the resort. Schools were given a $50 stipend from the resort to purchase supplies for their house. Calavera Hills Elementary’s design was a three-story, marshmallow-covered schoolhouse with windows that lit up and the school’s signature coyote mascot above the door. Among the other creative submissions were a beach lifeguard tower and a gingerbread recreation of Cape Rey.
Entry forms for the 2016 school Gingerbread House Contest will be available in late October. Interested schools can email info@caperey.com or call 760-683-5461.
