Carlsbad, San Marcos high school grads among Allgire scholarship recipients

The Allgire Foundation has awarded $18,500 in a second round of scholarship funds to San Diego students who have benefited from living in affordable housing communities.
The scholarships were awarded to 10 San Diego County residents who recently graduated from high school and those who are using post-secondary education to break generational cycles of poverty and impact future generations of students on paths similar to their own.
Kailani Chung is one of those students. She is a graduate from Carlsbad High School attending Colorado State this fall and is studying to become a veterinarian.
“I hope that when people reach my story they are encouraged to donate more money for kids in need, and for those who are in my situation to not feel alone,” said Chung, who is the recipient of the Mary Lou Allgire Memorial Scholarship. “My family is in a huge financial hardship, struggling just to get me through this first semester. With the Allgire scholarship, it will give my grandma a boost, and hopefully take some stress off her shoulders.”
San Marcos High School graduate Emanuel Díaz Sánchez, who is studying to be a mechanical engineer and pursuing additional education in music, is also an Allgire Foundation scholarship recipient.
The Allgire Foundation’s scholarship program was created out of the belief that transforming lives begins with education. The foundation’s affiliated company, Allgire General Contractors, works on some of the foundational issues that contribute to educational access and outcomes.
Although it has been assisting low-income residents for the past two years as a foundation, Allgire General Contractors has been helping residents in the affordable housing communities they built for the past 20 years. For this reason, it decided to aid students with a second round of scholarships, tallying up to $33,000 in scholarship funds awarded to San Diego area students this year alone.
“We are living through unprecedented times,” said Scott Silber, executive director at Allgire Foundation. “We are just getting over a pandemic and are now faced with inflation and although this affects everyone, we understand it has a greater impact on low-income households and can often determine whether someone pursues higher education or not. We are here for these students and this is why we thought, why not? Lets hand out more scholarships.”
