Oceanside CA— Big plays and a hard-nosed red zone defense helped Oceanside even their record at one with a 29-42 win over the Westview Wolverines(1-1) in the Pirates home opener Friday night. Oceanside only ran 10 offensive plays in the first half yet took a 21-15 lead into the locker room at the break.
Westview got on the board first when Wolverine kicker Anthony Meader would hit from 29 yards. The kick was the first of five first half field goals for the Wolverine junior.
After a touch-back on the ensuing kick-off, Oceanside QB Kyrin Beachem would find Kavika Tua open in the middle and Tua took it the rest of the way for a 76 yard touchdown.
The Wolverines were able to move the ball between the 20 yard lines but once they were in the red zone, penalties or the Pirates would deny Westview the touchdown. The Wolverines settled for a 18-yard field goal with 9:22 left in the first quarter, 6-7 Pirates.
Kavika Tua would shine once again on the following kick off running it back 80 yards for the score, 6-14 Oceanside with 9:06 left in the quarter.
Meader would add another three points for the Wolverines this time hitting from 34 yards, 9-14, Oceanside.
Westview would pull within two when Meader split the uprights from 37 yards, 12-14.
Dylan York would get his first touchdown of the night when he ran the kick-off back 90 yards to put the Pirates up 12-21.
Meader’s fifth field goal came from 26 yards to end the first half.
“The Westview kicker is amazing,” said Oceanside Coach, David Rodriguez. “I’m sure he’s going to win some ball games for them this season.” Meader was 5-6 with his only miss coming from 49 yards in the third quarter.
The Wolverines finally got into the end zone after Kyrin Beachem’s run on a fake punt fell short. In addition, a penalty gave Westview possession at the Oceanside 31 yard line. Wolverine QB Andrew Wiesley would cap the drive with an 8 yard keeper and give Westview their first lead since the first quarter, 22-21.
The lead didn’t last long. Kavika Tua would get his third touchdown of the night on a 40 yard reception from Beachem but Tua wasn’t done. Later in the quarter he took a pitch from Beacham and ran 45 yards for the score.
Dylan York would set up Oceanside’s next score when he intercepted Andrew Wiesley’s pass and returned it into Wolverine territory. York was then on the receiving end of a Beacham pass and ran it in from 19 yards.
Westview would score one more time with just over a minute to play when Benjamin O’brien received an 11 yard pass from Wiesley.
“Loads of respect for Westview Coach Kyle Williams and his charge. There was no quit in those kids and they are going to cause havoc in their league this year,” said coach Rodriguez. “We are going to have to get better on our end. I am proud of our kids coming off the ball game last week [a 34-19 loss at San Clemente]. We had a general feeling of dissatisfaction throughout the week for obvious reasons but we still have things we have to fix before our game with San Marcos next week. The Knights are a playoff team and it will be a playoff environment here in week three but what’s new in the Avocado League.”
San Marcos(2-0) won on the road in Grossmont, 32-21.

By David A. Willauer-Contributing Writer- The La Costa Canyon Mavericks put on an amazing display of offense and the Lippert brothers in their 27-7 win over Vista.
The Mavericks got on the board first as tailback Karson Lippert scored on a run of 49 yards(7 carries for 90 yards) to go up 7-0 in the first quarter. His brother Aiden had a run of 31 yards with 4 carries for 36 yards on the night.
La Costa Canyon scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Hayden Hurt to go up 14-0. Maverick QB Jake Schneck (5-8 for 122 yards) threw an 86 yard pass to Kareem Maaz with the PAT no good to go up 27-7
“This is a great team we knew that we have a strong mentality coming into the game but we must focus on ourselves and we executed well.” said LaCosta Canyon RB Karson Lippert.
“On the 49 yard touchdown, the offensive line blocked well for me. I give credit to the line as they did their duties which was good. It’s important for us to get an early lead like that which gets Vista discouraged but to get the lead is how you should start each quarter to set that tone for our team in the game. My brother Aiden has been working hard in pre-season and I am proud of him.” said Maverick RB Karson Lippert.
The Panthers(1-1) only score came in the fourth quarter as QB Josh Davies who had 7 completions out of 15 attempts for 96 yards threw a touchdown pass of 52 yards to Arturo Lopez.
The Mavericks of La Costa Canyon will be at San Clemente to take on the Tritons while Vista will be at rival Rancho Buena Vista in a Friday night 7:pm contest
