Carlsbad CA— In a battle of ranked, undefeated Avocado League football powers, 4th ranked La Costa Canyon struck first when QB Jake Neufield (12- 23 for 168 yards) hit JaQuan Carroll (3 receptions for 88 yards) for a 55 yard TD pass, in the first period.
In the second period, the Grizzlies Ezekiel Matta connected on a 30 yard field goal pull Mission Hills within 4, 7-3. Maverick running back Karron Lippert, 7 carries for 57 yards, dazzled the crowd on the home field when he scored on a 29-yard run giving La Costa a 13-3 lead.
Mission Hills standout and University of Utah bound, Jeff Tuttle(17-27, 155 yds) brought the Grizzlies back as he threw 2 touchdown passes of 10 and 15 yards to Chris Olave (13 receptions for 163 yards putting the Grizzles up for good, 17-13.
In the 3rd quarter, running back Damon Wigand scored on a 6-yard run to make the final score 24-13. in favor of the top ranked Grizzlies
Chris Hauser, Mission Hills head football coach commented on the game: “These were two good hard fighting football teams that you saw out there tonight and this is the type of game is fun for our ball club. Tonight, the players and fans embraced the atmosphere and that is what good football is all about. We trailed 13-3 but we found a way to come back and win. Jack Tuttle, my QB, was banged up earlier in the first quarter but I am proud of what he did tonight. He showed a lot of grit but we have a lot of football left. This was a key Avocado League game and we wanted to win tonight.”
With the win, the Grizzles of Mission Hills are 7-0 and top ranked in San Diego High School Football County. They host the El Camino Wildcats next Friday night. The Mavericks will travel to San Marcos High School to take on the Knights.
