Carlsbad CA— Results from the 36th annual Carlsbad Triathlon were released by the City of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department. The race, one of the longest running municipal triathlons in the country, took place this morning, Sunday, July 9, 2017, at Tamarack Beach in Carlsbad with more than 600 participants, ranging in age from 9 to 79, competing in 30 divisions.
In the Elite Men’s Division Cam Hill, 50, from Cottonwood, Arizona, finished in first place. Hill was also the first place finisher of the 2009 Carlsbad Triathlon. Jose Augusto De Azevedo Antu, 39, from San Diego, was second. Niels Vande Casteele, 30, originally from Brussels and currently living in Cardiff, finished third. Chris Berg, 32, from San Diego, was fourth this year.
Finishing first in the Elite Women’s Division was Michellie Jones, 47, from Carlsbad, who won an unprecedented 12th victory. Among her other accomplishments, Jones won a silver medal in the inaugural triathlon event in the 2000 Olympics and a first place in the 2006 Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii. Zoe Bowden, 17, from Malaysia finished second. Bowden is currently training in San Diego for the Southeast Asia Games in August where she will represent her country.
