In an Open Division, Semi Final Round of the CIF Sectional Football Playoff contest, the top seeded Dons of Cathedral Catholic defeated the Grizzlies (7-5) of Mission Hills High School by a 44-21 score.
Chris Hauser Mission Hills Football Coach: “We weren’t consistent enough on both sides of the ball as they put up 44 points on the board. They did a much better job then what we did.”
“We moved the ball but we fumbled on our short plays. Our offensive line did well pass protecting but we had a lot problems when it came to opening holes for the backs. One situation we had an opportunity to get the right players in the game but we were hit with too many players on the field penalty.”
“Jack Tuttle is a high level quarterback and does what he can and plays to the best of his ability.” continued the coach,”Sam Dixon’s first touchdown was the big play but in the second half, Cathedral Catholic intercepted Jack Tuttle’s pass which was key. We have come a long ways with 21 of our starters being new. Jack Tuttle is improving a lot at QB along with an amazing 7-5 record. We put a magical game together against Oceanside and the Grossmont game will be the big upset, one for the ages when these kids look back on the season. My hat is off to them.”
The Dons led 14-0 after the first period. Running back Sam Dixon had 11 carries for 60 yards and scored the first Grizzly touchdown on an 8 yard run to get within 14-7. The Dons scored 2 more touchdowns to go up 27-7 before QB, Jack Tuttle, who was 22 completions out of 39 attempts for 270 yards, threw a touchdown pass to Ian Fryday (4 receptions for 27 yards) for 13 yards to close within 27-14.
After the Dons scored 2 more touchdowns along with a field goal, Jack Tuttle threw his second touchdown pass to Louis Flores( 3 receptions for 23 yards) for 16 yards to make the final score 44-21 in favor of Cathedral Catholic. Helix, the number two seed, will face Cathedral Catholic for the Open Division title.
