Oceanside CA— It was a match up of unbeaten teams Friday night on Herb Meyer Field at El Camino High School with the Poway Titans visiting the Wildcats on Military Appreciation Day.
“I only have one thing to say to you guys. Congratulations, You’re an undefeated 3 and 0” El Camino Head Coach, John Roberts told his team after senior standout Ricky Villagomez made an interception on the final play of the game to preserve the win for the Wildcats.
A stingy Wildcat defense along with aggressive play calling and good execution by the offense helped keep El Caminos record perfect for the young season against a Poway team that refused to quit. Several times the Wildcats would convert on 4th and long with a few of those in their own territory.
El Camino scored first after capitalizing on interception by Ricky Villagomez. The Wildcats drove 31 yards in 7 plays capped by a 3-yard quarterback keeper by Beau Gallegos. The point after failed. 0-6 El Camino with 6:17 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcat defense held Poway to four straight three and outs but their offense struggled with drive killing penalties. The Titans got on the board late in the first quarter after a fake punt kept their 68 yard drive alive and two penalties on the Wildcats assisted Poway down the field. The Titans scored when Robbie Sullivan hit a wide open Connor Boyle for the 9 yard TD and the PAT gave the Titans a 7-6 lead with 1:39 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats scored late in the half on a 14 yard Beau Gallegos touchdown pass to take a 6-13 lead but that lead was short-lived. On the ensuing kickoff, Titan return man, Jared Adelman caught the ball on the right hash-mark of the 3 yard-line cut left and sprinted 97 yards for the score. PAT was good and the Titans took a 14-13 lead to the locker room.
Tough defense by the Wildcats and a little luck put El Camino back on top in the third quarter. The Wildcats offense had a short field to work with after Poway had to punt from their own end zone. After driving to the Titan 4 yard line, a motion penalty backed up the Wildcats. On the next play, Beau Gallegos scrambled to his left, was stripped of the ball which bounced into the end zone and was recovered by Michael Chatman for a Wildcat 14-20 lead.
Again Poway would bounce right back as Jacob Gaines would walk the tightrope along the right sideline for a 53 yard touchdown and the 21-20 lead with 1:18 to go in the third quarter.
Christian Betz took over at quarterback for El Camino in the fourth quarter driving the Wildcats down to the Poway 34 yard-line. Chris Brown took the hand-off and rushed 34 yards for the final score of the game, 21-26.
John Armentrout added to his season interception total with two picks last night and is leading the county with five interceptions.
Up next for the Wildcats is a home game against Fallbrook, after a bye, on September 25.
In other local scores; Oceanside bounced back from last weeks loss with a 12-7 win over Chaparral out of Temecula. The Pirates host San Pasqual next Friday, 7:00pm.
