Encinitas residents interested in serving on the City Council have until Jan. 9 to submit applications.
The District 4 vacancy opened with the election of Councilmember Bruce Ehlers to the mayor’s seat last November. He was sworn into office along with new Councilmembers Luke Shaffer for District 1 and Jim O’Hara for District 2. Current Districr 3 Councilmember Joy Lyndes now serves as deputy mayor.
District 4 covers Olivenhain east to the city’s borders with Carlsbad, San Marcos and Rancho Santa Fe. It also covers portions of New Encinitas.

Applicants must attend an upcoming City Council meeting, currently set for Jan. 22, 2025, where they will discuss their qualifications and interests in serving on council. The City Council could appoint the new District 4 representative at that time or push the appointment to a later date, according to a city news release.
