Encinitas has two youth-oriented programs seeking applicants this month.
The city’s Youth Commission seeks applicants through April 18, and a Sister City Program youth exchange is open for applications through April 19.
Sister City Program
Ninth- and 10th-graders living in Encinitas can apply for a Sister City Program cultural exchange with Amakusa, Japan. The youth element of the program aims to build international understanding between the cities’ younger residents, according to the city.
The Sister City Program was launched between Encinitas and Amakusa, formerly named Hondo, in 1988.
The summer youth exchange, set to take place between July 23 to Aug. 1, gives Encinitas kids the opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese culture by staying with host families, being involved with cultural activities and building friendships with their Japanese counterparts, according to a city announcement.
Airfare, trip lodging and homestay accommodations are included for the nine-day excursion. Applications are due by 4 p.m. Friday, April 19, and can be completed online at the city’s online Sister City page.
Youth Commission
Encinitas kids in grades seven through 12 can apply for seats on the city’s Youth Commission through 5 p.m. Thursday, April 18.
The nine-member panel helps build plans, review youth programs and advise the City Council on matters involving Encinitas’ younger residents. Meetings are the first Wednesday of the month at 4:30 p.m., September through June.
Information about the Youth Commission and application process can be found on the city’s commission website. Those interested in applying can also call Elle Camarena at 760-943-2261.
