A woman was hit and killed by a train in the Encinitas community of Cardiff on Saturday, Feb. 10, the fourth such fatality along North San Diego County tracks since the start of the year.
The incident happened just before 8 a.m. near the intersection of Chesterfield Drive and San Elijo Avenue, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported. The unidentified woman was hit and killed by a southbound North County Transit District Coaster train.
There were no further details about the incident. The sheriff’s North Coastal Station handed the investigation to the department’s Transit Enforcement Unit, which covers incidents on NCTD routes.
The death is the fourth along coastal railroad tracks since the start of the year. A man was killed when he was struck by a BNSF freight train in Encinitas late Jan. 13. Two days later, on Jan. 15, a man was hit and killed by an Amtrak train in Carlsbad. Then, on Feb. 3, a man was struck and killed by a BNSF freight train on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
In addition, on Jan. 11 in Sorrento Valley, a man was struck and killed by a Coaster train while walking his dog during the early morning.
