Middle school students have an opportunity now through November to learn career pathways in the medical field through the Palomar Health Foundation’s second annual Middle School Medical Discoveries program.
The program, also known as Middle School M.D., places students with medical professionals at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where they learn life-saving skills and potential career pathways.
“As leaders in healthcare education, we believe that nurturing the aspirations of our young minds is crucial,” Encinitas resident Kristin Gaspar, Palomar Health Foundation president and CEO, said in a Palomar Health news release. “The Middle School M.D. program isn’t just about learning medical skills; it’s about igniting a passion for healthcare and inspiring the next generation of healthcare heroes right here in San Diego.”
About 1,500 students, including from the Escondido Union School District, have been involved in the program so far, according to the foundation.
“Our commitment to the youth of our community is unwavering, and through this program, we aim to empower them with the knowledge and dreams that will shape a brighter and healthier future for all,” Gaspar said in the news release.
The program is held in collaboration with the Gilead Foundation, a nonprofit group endowed by Gilead Sciences.
“The Middle School M.D. program by Palomar Health is an impactful opportunity for San Diego’s youth to get involved in healthcare, and we are honored to help support it,” Gilead Foundation President Kate Wilson said in the news release.
Middle School M.D. is supported by a grant from California’s Health Careers Exploration Program.
Palomar Medical Center is part of the public Palomar Health District.
