The Encinitas Street Faire helps usher in the full spring season every April. The second half of the month offers a diverse array of community events. Check out some of what coastal North County has to offer below.
Saturday, April 21, 10 a.m.-noon — Historic Encinitas walking tour: The Encinitas Historical Society offers a free walking tour of historic Encinitas. The tour, which is led by an Encinitas Historical Society volunteer, provides participants with facts about Encinitas’ history, including how the city came to be known as the “Flower Capital.” Attendees will also learn why early settlers came to town in the 1880s and hear anecdotes about the early owners of many historic buildings, and more. Saturday, April 21, 7-8:30 p.m. — Sacred Earth, an Earth Day Celebration: Experience a concert evolved from a workshop inspired by the poem “Sacred Earth” by Gary Snyder. Laura Sandage and her Con*spire method employ music, spoken word and movement to bring the poem to life. The concert will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito, 1036 Solana Drive in Solana Beach. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Saturday, April 21, through Sunday, April 29 — April in Bloom at The Forum Carlsbad: The Forum Carlsbad celebrates spring during the mall’s nine-day public event featuring a variety of activities and shopping opportunities await visitors, from a fashion show and live Butterfly Encounter hosted by Butterfly Farms of Encinitas to a farmers market, crafts and classes. Sunday, April 22, 1 p.m. — Payne-Johansen House grand opening: The Friends of Oceanside Parks and the Heritage Park Village Museum host a grand opening of the historic Payne-Johansen House. The afternoon will include a “Cream Tea,” circa 1900s fashion show and house tours. Tickets are $20. More information: Call 760-435-5041.
Sunday, April 22, 6:30 p.m. — The Rick Holmstrom Band with Nathan James and The Rhythm Scratchers: Premier blues guitarist Rick Holmstrom performs live at The Brooks Theatre, 217 North Coast Highway in Oceanside. Local favorite Nathan James and The Rhythm Scratchers will open the show. The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for happy hour, with the show beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased at Oceanside Theatre Company. More information: Call 760-433-8900.
Tuesday, April 24, 12:30-1:30 p.m. — How the Computer Affects Your Health and Brain: Offered as part of Carlsbad City Library’s Good Life Health and Wellness Lecture Series, participants can learn how to avoid the physical and the mental consequences of use and overuse of computers. Presented by Dr. Philip Goscienski. All lectures are free and take place at Carlsbad City Library’s Schulman Auditorium, located at 1775 Dove Lane in Carlsbad. Wednesday, April 25, 6-8:30 p.m. — San Dieguito Union High School District College & Career Night: The San Dieguito Union High School District hosts its annual College & Career Night at the Del Mar Fairgrounds to provide access to college representatives and information about careers to all students attending schools in the district. More than 200 colleges and universities from across the nation will participate, as well as test prep, interviewing strategy, summer program and financial aid companies. Saturday, April 28, 10-11 a.m. — San Elijo Lagoon Discovery Tours: Join San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy naturalists in the final Lagoon Discovery Tour of April (the tours are held the first and last Saturdays of each month). The tour begins and ends at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center, 2710 Manchester Ave in Cardiff. Participants will get an overview of life between the twice-daily tides in the wetland where land meets ocean. The tour offers a way to see a diversity of birds, other animals and plants. Saturday, April 28, 10 a.m.-noon — Spring Herb Walk at the San Diego Botanic Garden: Tour San Diego Botanic Garden’s fragrant Herb Garden and learn more about growing and utilizing herbs in the kitchen. Explore the medicinal and aromatic use of herbs and create herbal products. This is an event for ages 18 and up. Cost: $45 for members, $54 for nonmembers; plus a $10 supply fee paid to the instructor on the day of class. Address: 230 Quail Gardens Drive in Encinitas. Saturday, April 28, 6:30-9:30 p.m. — Passport to Brazil: Encinitas Friends of the Arts presents Passport to Brazil at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oak Crest Park Drive in Encinitas. In keeping with the organization’s mission to celebrate diversity through arts and culture, the event’s goal is to foster an appreciation and fresh awareness of ancient and modern Brazil, and raise funds for much needed arts programs in Encinitas. Sunday, April 29, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. — Pour It On at the San Diego Botanic Garden: Participants age 18 and up can learn how painting is about discovery and expression of personal creativity at San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas. All skill levels are welcome. The class is taught by Helen Shafer Garcia. Cost: $105 for members, $124 for nonmembers. Fee includes $10 for materials.
