A 37-year-old man was severely injured July 6 in a motorcycle crash on South Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The rider was ejected from the motorcycle at 11:56 a.m. when he was unable to avoid hitting a car that entered traffic directly in front of him, according to a sheriff’s incident report.

The motorcyclist was heading south on his 2002 Suzuki GSX 1300 at about 30 mph in a 45 mph zone in the 1400 block of South Coast Highway 101, according to the report, when a car parked southbound entered the road from the west curb. The driver of the 1990 Volvo 240, identified as an 18-year-old man, entered traffic directly in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle rider had no opportunity to stop, the report stated.

The motorcycle hit the front right wheel of the car, and the rider was ejected and slid about 12 feet on the right side of his helmet on pavement, authorities reported, ultimately stopping face-down about 50 feet from the point of impact.

The rider was transported to an intensive care unit for treatment of several broken ribs and internal injuries, the report stated. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
