The popular and controversial Surfing Madonna mosaic has reappeared in Leucadia.
Mosaic supporter Scott Chatfield, who designed a website profiling the art piece, announced June 25 on Facebook that the Surfing Madonna is now on display between Cafe Ipe and Surfy Surfy. The mosaic, created by Mark Patterson, stirred controversy when it was quietly installed in April 2011 on public property under a train bridge at Highway 101 and Encinitas Boulevard in downtown Encinitas. The mosaic was eventually removed, and efforts to find a permanent place to display it had been elusive.
The coffeehouse and surf shop are located in the 900 block of North Coast Highway 101 in Leucadia.
