Vista Deputy Mayor Katie Melendez will return to the City Council after winning reelection on November’s ballot, according to final results Dec. 3 from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters.
Melendez, who occupies the District 3 council seat, surpassed Denisse Barragan by 831 votes, 55.32% (4,323 votes) to 3,492 (44.68%), the results showed.
The vote gap between the contenders for an open District 2 council seat was much wider, according to the results. Jeff Fox secured a win over Anthony White by 2,396 votes.
Fox won by 62.25% (6,047 votes) compared with White’s 37.65% (3,651 votes).
Eight-year District 2 Councilman Joe Green did not seek reelection.
Overall Vista voter turnout by precinct ran between a little more than 50% to nearly 90%, according to a Registrar of Voters map. Countywide, voter turnout was 75.8%, with the vast majority of ballots cast by mail, the registrar reported. Out of 1,983,767 registered voters, 1,503,018 ballots were counted. Mail-in ballots numbered 1,275,304. In-person ballots numbered 227,714.
