California is the second most expensive state for average household bills, with Encinitas, Carlsbad, Solana Beach and Del Mar cracking the top 100 for most expensive in the state, according to statistics released Thursday, Aug. 3, by consumer financial management company doxo.
Other North San Diego County communities fared better on the list, including the region’s two largest cities, Oceanside and Escondido, which placed 201st and 254th respectively out of 431 communities statewide.
San Diego County placed 12th out of 55 counties listed, with an average $35,242 per year in household bills, doxo reported. On a yearly scale, San Diego County household bills are $10,685 per year higher than doxo’s national average of $24,557.
The national, state and local rankings were determined by reviewing the average amount that households pay for their bills — items such as mortgages, rent, utilities, automobile loans and insurance, cable/satellite services and health insurance.
Marin County was the most expensive county in California, according to doxo. Hawaii ranked as the most expensive state for household bills.
North County communities crack top 100

On average, Carlsbad residents’ household bills were $16,617 per year higher than doxo’s reported U.S. average. Residents pay $3,431 per month, or $41,174 per year, placing the city 98th on doxo’s California state rankings. Bills account for 36% of the annual Carlsbad household income.
For Encinitas, residents’ household bills were $16,593 per year higher than the reported U.S. average. Residents pay $3,429 per month, or $41,150 per year, placing the city 99th in the state. Bills account for 33% of the annual Encinitas household income.
Solana Beach placed 84th in California for the most expensive household bills on average, $17,382 per year higher than doxo’s U.S. average. The average household in the city pays $3,495 per month, or $41,939 per year, on bills.
Del Mar placed 50th in the state for the most expensive household bills on average, $19,877 per year higher than doxo’s U.S. average. The average household in the city pays $3,703 per month, or $44,434 per year, on bills.
Other North County communities fare better
On average, Oceanside residents’ household bills were $10,314 per year higher than doxo’s reported U.S. average. Residents pay $$2,906 per month, or $34,871 per year, placing the city 201st on doxo’s state rankings. Bills account for 47% of the annual Oceanside household income.
For San Marcos, residents’ household bills were $9,136 per year higher than the reported U.S. average. Residents pay $2,808 per month, or $33,693 per year, placing the city 229th in the state. Bills account for 40% of the annual San Marcos household income.
In Escondido, residents’ household bills were $8,256 per year higher than the reported U.S. average. Residents pay $2,734 per month, or $32,813 per year, placing the city 254th in the state. Bills account for 46% of the annual Escondido household income.
Vista residents’ household bills were $7,277 per year higher than doxo’s reported U.S. average. Residents pay $2,653 per month, or $31,834 per year, placing the city 280th on doxo’s California rankings. Bills account for 42% of the annual Vista household income.
Elsewhere in North County
Poway ranked 150th in the state for most expensive household bills on average, $12,709 per year higher than the national average. The average household in the city pays $3,106 per month, or $37,266 per year, on bills.
Ramona placed 163rd in California for the most expensive household bills on average, $11,841 per year higher than doxo’s U.S. average. The average household in the city pays $3,033 per month, or $36,398 per year, on bills.
Valley Center was 243th in the state for the most expensive household bills on average, $8,730 per year higher than doxo’s U.S. average. The average household in the city pays $2,774 per month, or $33,287 per year, on bills.
Fallbrook placed 274th in California for the most expensive household bills on average, $7,553 per year higher than doxo’s U.S. average. The average household in the community pays $2,676 per month, or $32,110 per year, on bills.
