Authorities are investigating a second train death along coastal North San Diego County this week after a man was hit and killed by an Amtrak train in Carlsbad on Monday, Jan. 15.
The incident follows the Jan. 13 death of a man who was hit by a BNSF freight train near Vulcan Avenue and D Street in Encinitas. The victim’s name has not been released.
Monday’s death occurred at about 12:30 p.m. near the Carlsbad Village Station, according to a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department report. Officers from the Carlsbad Police Department arrived at the scene and found the man, who was hit by a southbound Amtrak train. Paramedics were called to the scene, but the victim, who was not identified, died at the scene.
The Carlsbad Police Department handed the investigation to the sheriff’s Transit Enforcement Unit, which covers incidents along North County Transit District rail routes, which Amtrak uses.
The Medical Examiner’s Office is also investigating the man’s death.
The Sheriff’s Department asks that anyone with information about the incident to call its non-emergency line at 858-565-5200.
