Encinitas is again on San Diego Gas & Electric’s list of potential communities affected by power cuts during Santa Ana winds predicted for late Tuesday, Oct. 29, through Thursday, Oct. 31.

While no power had been shut off to San Diego County communities as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, several face cuts, particularly in East County and to the south. Closer to the coast, portions of Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos and Escondido are on the list of potential affected communities, according to SDG&E.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for the San Diego region, although the coastal areas were not included in forecasters’ map as of 5 p.m. Tuesday. The warning runs 11 p.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Thursday.

Wind speeds for north coastal areas including Encinitas could reach 20 to 30 mph, according to the Weather Service. High temperatures Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be in the mid-70s with lows around 50.

The city of Encinitas issued a community advisory Tuesday in anticipation of the windy weather.

“Strong Santa Ana Winds are expected to hit San Diego County again — lasting through Thursday, Oct. 31st,” the advisory stated. “With the increased wind, low relative humidity and dry fuels, there is in an increased fire risk. One ember is all it takes to start a major brush fire.”

The advisory included tips for residents to keep in mind:

Do not trim or mow grass during Red Flag and Santa Ana wind events.

Avoid driving vehicles or trailers through dry grass in hot and/or windy weather.

Protect openings in structures where embers can enter during fire.

All portable gas-powered equipment must have spark arresters.
