The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that a man’s death in sheriff’s custody at Tri-City Medical Center on July 8 was the result of natural causes, authorities announced Wednesday, July 12.
An autopsy revealed that the man died of cancer, according to a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department report.
The man, who authorities identified as Zeke Davis, 43, of Oceanside, had been arrested by the Oceanside Police Department on June 28 on suspicion of resisting arrest, assault of an officer and violating a temporary restraining order, according to the report. During the booking process at the Vista Detention Facility, a medical screening determined that he needed to be taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Davis, who was admitted to Tri-City Medical Center for treatment of a pre-existing medical condition, was under care at the time of his death, the Sheriff’s Department reported.
The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has been notified of the death and the department’s Homicide Unit is investigating, which is standard procedure in such incidents, according to the Sheriff’s Department report.
