The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the death of a man in custody at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside on Saturday, July 8.
The Citizens’ Law Enforcement Review Board has been notified of the death and the department’s Homicide Unit is investigating, which is standard procedure in such incidents, according to a Sheriff’s Department report.
Authorities identified the man as Zeke Davis, 43, of Oceanside. He had been arrested by the Oceanside Police Department on June 28 on suspicion of resisting arrest, assault of an officer and violating a temporary restraining order, according to the report. During the booking process at the Vista Detention Facility, a medical screening determined that he needed to be taken to the hospital for evaluation.
At the hospital, Davis was admitted for treatment of a pre-existing medical condition, the Sheriff’s Department stated. Davis was under care at the time of his death.
The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
