Authorities collect over 100 firearms during San Marcos event

More than 100 firearms were turned in to authorities on Saturday, March 25, during a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Gun Safety Event held in San Marcos.
The event was held in cooperation with the Oceanside and Carlsbad police departments, in addition to other local agencies, and took place at the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station.
Authorities received a total of 104 firearms, the Sheriff’s Department reported. Individuals turning in unwanted firearms received a $100 gift card for handguns, rifles and shotguns, or a $200 gift card for assault weapons and ghost guns.
In addition, authorities distributed 47 cable locks and 60 lock boxes to people looking to secure firearms kept in their homes.
The collected weapons will be processed and checked for any links to thefts and other crimes, according to the report. Owners of guns discovered to be stolen will be contacted. The remaining weapons will be destroyed.
