Metrolink and Amtrak service between Oceanside and Irvine has been suspended as of Friday, Sept. 30, over bluff stability concerns where coastal train tracks run through San Clemente.

Amtrak trains and commuter rail service for Metrolink’s Orange County and Inland Empire-Orange County lines north from Oceanside will be suspended indefinitely, the transportation agencies announced Sept. 29.

“Working with geologists, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors, we have determined to ensure passenger safety service suspension is necessary,” Metrolink stated in its announcement. “Until we have confirmation from the experts the slope movement has stopped, we will not resume Metrolink service.”

Amtrak stated that it is in the process of setting up alternative transportation options for its customers facing disruptions from the tracks’ closure.

Bluff stability has been a concern along San Diego County’s train tracks as well, specifically through Del Mar, where bluff failures near the tracks have required repairs in recent years.
