Oceanside CA— The Oceanside Public Library is proud to host a series of PBS Point of View (POV) documentaries as part of a continuing series. The second Wednesday every month, we screen notable documentaries with civic reflection discussions to follow. These films will be screened at the Oceanside Public Library second floor Foundation Room, 330 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA. 92054.
Please join us Wednesday, September 14 at 5:30 p.m., for a screening of Don’t Tell Anyone (No Le Digas a Nadie), a moving film that follows immigrant activist Angy Rivera as she joins a generation of dreamers ready to push for change in the only home she’s ever known — the United States. As an undocumented immigrant, Angy Rivera knew the pain of living “in the shadows.” She graduated from high school and discovered that getting financial aid for college was impossible without a Social Security number; her dreams for a better future were shaken. All of her hard work in high school, including extracurricular activities “didn’t matter.”
According to the American Immigration Council, only 5 to 10 percent of America’s approximately 65,000 undocumented high school graduates go to college, primarily because of financial constraints. This film is a co-presentation with Latino Public Broadcasting.
On Tuesday October 12 at 5:30 p.m., we will be screening The Return. This film explores the changes in the prison system stemming from the 2012 amendment to its “Three Strikes” law, shortening the sentences of thousands of “lifers.” See this unprecedented reform through the eyes of those on the front lines — prisoners suddenly freed, families turned upside down, and attorneys and judges wrestling with an untested law. This film is a co-production of American Documentary | POV and ITVS, is a co-presentation with the National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) and is an official selection of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival.
At Oceanside Public Library, we celebrate a diverse Oceanside community and work to awaken a sense of cultural belonging. We also strive to promote civic participation and reflection by encouraging dialogue and promoting informed decisions about current issues. PBS POV features independent non-fiction films that highlight social issues. Through working with PBS POV for the documentary film series, Oceanside Public Library is able to expand on those goals.
This free series is sponsored by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library and is a collaboration with the award-winning documentary series POV (www.pbs.org/pov). These documentaries and discussions will be educational and engaging for all ages. For more information, please visit the library’s website at www.oceansidepubliclibrary.org or call (760) 435-5600.
