South Bend IN— In its debut, TIDE Baton Twirling of Oceanside wins big at the National Championships, held at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana last week.
Tide’s Dance-Twirl Team proudly represented California, placing 3rd out of 28 teams from across the nation in the Beginner Pre-Teen Dance-Twirl category.
Dance-Twirl Team members include Faith Barrett of San Marcos, Megan Krumheuer of Oceanside, Carla Leon of San Diego, Ryli Smith (2016, Team Captain) of Oceanside, and Riley Ventura of Las Vegas.
Top placements and highlights in the individual events are as follows:
- Carla Leon placed 4th overall in the Beginner Pre-Teen National Pageant, winning 1st place in the strutting portion of the competition.
- Faith Barrett and Ryli Smith won 1st place in the World-Open Junior Intermediate Duet Championships.
- Megan Krumheuer won 1st place in her Novice 2-Baton division for 8 year olds, and Riley Ventura won 1st place in the Beginner Flag Twirling competition for 9 year olds.
All girls combined, brought home over 30 “Top 10” placement medals, where there was a range of between 20-55 competitors in each division.
This year’s National Baton Twirling Association National Championships was the largest one ever, drawing close to 5,000 competitors from around the country.
Kaycie Landis, a feature twirler for San Diego State University also represented the Aztecs very well at nationals… Kaycie brought home 3 national titles for the Aztecs!!!
TIDE Baton Twirling of Oceanside is coached by Catherine Watters, one of California’s premier coaches. Catherine is a former 2011 College Miss Majorette of America, and 2-time World Team Member, winning a gold medal in Eindhoven, Netherlands, in 2006, and a silver medal in Neuchatel, Switzerland, in 2012.
Tide is open to baton twirlers of all ages and levels. Catherine is also the feature twirling coach/advisor for the San Diego State University Aztecs.
