Dear Editor:
This Fourth of July, Americans will toast our country’s independence with friends, family, and fireworks. As the fun festivities get underway this week, Markstein Beverage Co. reminds adults 21 and older in North San Diego County to drink responsibly by Designating a Driver ahead of time.
We all know not to drive any vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Not only is it dangerous to you and others on the road, but you can be arrested for driving your car with a Blood Alcohol Concentration of 0.08 or more (.01 if under 21 and .04 for commercial vehicle drivers).
The Automobile Club of Southern California estimates that a first-time DUI conviction in California can cost “approximately $15,649 or more in fines, penalties, restitution, legal fees and increased insurance costs.”
To enjoy the holiday safely, include your Designated Driver in the fun without encouraging him or her to drink alcohol. In the event your Designated Driver begins drinking, go with a backup plan instead. Have your backup plan ready. You might:
- Have a second sober driver in mind you can call for a safe ride home.
- If you are an Auto Club member, keep the number handy to call for a free ride home and a “Tipsy Tow” of up to seven miles.
- Input a few taxi cab numbers in your phone and bring cab money.
- Set up a ride-sharing account by downloading your app of choice on your smartphone.
As your locally owned and independently operated North County beer distributor, Markstein Beverage Co. is committed to keeping our local streets and highways safe. We are proud to partner with local colleges and community programs to encourage responsible behavior when drinking.
Let’s all do our part to make sure everyone has a fun and safe holiday.
Sincerely,
Kenneth W. Markstein
Chief Executive Officer
