Oceanside CA- Along with various St Patricks Day celebrations at local pubs and restaurants, here are a few events happening this weekend in Oceanside.
Tri-City Inline Hockey League (TCIHL) celebrates its 21st year with a “big bang” at the Opening Ceremony of 2014 Spring Season, Saturday, March 15, at the Martin Luther King Jr Park’s roller hockey rink located at 4300 Mesa Drive in Oceanside. The ceremony kicks off a series of fun games and practices, which will continue at the rink through June 7. A popular alternative to ice hockey in the warm climate of Southern California, this sport is known for the distinct shape of roller skates with wheels situated in one row, and it has been embraced by many local families of players between the ages of 5 to 17. Majority of the league’s members reside in Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Vista. However youth from other nearby cities in North County San Diego are also enrolled in the organization’s co-ed recreational program.
March 15th celebrations will commence 10:45 am with music and speeches by city and league officials. Shane Nakamura Tri-City In-Line Hockey League’s Vice President said in his statement: “I was one of the original players when TCIHL started its first season of play back in 1993. I was a 13 year old kid who fell in love with the sport and now, 20 years and 6 kids later I’m back. This time it’s 4 of my 6 children who are playing hockey and enjoying the same league that I helped start.” In fact, TCIHL was the first sanctioned inline league in California by USA Hockey, which oversees player safety, education and commemoration.
Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood will be present at the March 15th event to commemorate the passing of two decades in TCIHL’s history. Representing the city of Oceanside, he will be at the rink during the U.S. National Anthem’s performance and salute to the American flag. The Mayor will drop on the rink the official first puck of the 2014 Spring Season games. The day will continue with the season’s first games between the teams, which general public and visitors are welcome to attend.
