Oceanside CA— On February 6, 2019, S.D. Malkin Properties, Inc broke ground on the 2.75-acre lots spanning Mission Avenue and N. Pacific Street for the Seabird and Mission Pacific destination resort hotels. On Thursday, May 27, 2021 officials from the City of Oceanside and S.D Malkin Properties, Inc. cut ceremonial ribbons to mark the opening of two hotels. The adjacent hotels are the newest and largest oceanfront resort development in San Diego County in more than half of a century, collectively spanning 700 feet of beachfront property.

“Part one of this story began well before we showed up on the scene over sixteen years ago,” said Jeremy Cohen, Senior Vice President at S.D. Malkin Properties. “Many other ideas and plans were proposed by developers and never happened. Part two of the story: Once we became involved, it was filled with unexpected twists and turns. For me, the story of the creation of this place can best be encapsulated by the Rascal Flatts lyrics God bless the broken road that lead me straight to you.”
“This has been a long journey that actually started at least 20 years before I got on the City Council,” said Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez. “We all wanted something good for Oceanside. How do we get there? I think we had our largest workshop at the Beach Community Center when we had the request for proposals. One person really listened and that was Jeremy Cohen.” Continued Mayor Sanchez, “We wanted a Four-Star hotel because we didn’t have anything that luxurious here. What else do we need? A ballroom. And what else did we need? We wanted a place to go have a drink at a really nice place and be able to see the ocean. There were so many things that this community asked for and Jeremy listened.”

“Opening a resort is an amazing experience. I have to say opening two resorts a week apart is twice as special,” said Michael Stephens, Area Managing Director of Mission Pacific Hotel and The Seabird Resort. “What has made this project even more astonishing is opening two hotels while we’re in a pandemic. This has been an experience that will never be forgotten by any of us. When I think of what has been accomplished, I smile with pride. I know that we are all a part of something very special.”
In the audience for the ceremony were many former council members and former mayors including Terry Johnson and Jim Wood. The library on the second floor of The Seabird was dedicated to former Mayor Wood after the ribbon cutting for the Seabird.
The Mission Pacific Hotel is a vibrant beachfront sanctuary with a laid-back spirit. Valle, a Guadalupe Valley Kitchen will debut this summer as the hotel’s signature restaurant, helmed by acclaimed Chef Roberto Alcocer. Featuring a spacious outdoor dining veranda overlooking the ocean and private dining room, Valle will underscore California culinary inspiration rooted in the traditions of the Guadalupe Valley, perfectly rendered, and delivered by one of Baja’s most celebrated chefs. The Rooftop at Mission Pacific is Oceanside Beach’s first rooftop bar, where guests can enjoy expansive views and gorgeous sunsets with lounge seating and a range of specialty cocktails, craft beers, and inventive cuisine by Chef Alcocer. High/Low is an easy, breezy oceanfront café featuring expertly crafted bites with an emphasis on natural, fresh ingredients. Mission Pacific collaborated with Tara Lazar, a Southern California native and founder of the innovative hospitality group F10 Creative (Cheeky’s, Birba, Mr. Lyons and Seymour’s), on High/Low.

Most whimsical is Charlie’s, a decadent dessert bar in the transformed Graves House, the charming beach cottage seen in the iconic 1986 film, “Top Gun.” Built nearly 140 years ago, this piece of cinematic history was moved for the first time to Mission Pacific for its $1 million restoration. Mission Pacific Hotel collaborated with Tara Lazar on this delightful culinary concept to serve up fresh interpretations of classic treats.

At the heart of the Mission Pacific Hotel vibe is a robust list of local experiences, infused with the laid-back Oceanside (fondly known as “O’side”) spirit. At Mission Pacific Hotel, a unique “Skate School” program pays homage to Oceanside’s beloved action sport scene via guided skateboard lessons from Neal Mims, a lauded Olympic skateboard coach and talent behind Golden State Skateboarding, followed by a tour of local skateboard sites as well as a custom skateboard-making experience. Additionally, an “Après Surf” concept at The Rooftop embraces Oceanside’s breezy surf culture with an array of local beers and Baja-influenced fare curated with the help of the area’s top surfers. Finally, guests can take in vibrant artwork throughout the hotel, selected in partnership with the Oceanside Museum of Art.
