The Urban Corps of San Diego County received a $15,000 grant from the County of San Diego Neighborhood Reinvestment Program, as well as donations from key partners, for the development of a series of food distribution events for program participants

San Diego CA— Young adults in the San Diego region have faced increased challenges due to the pandemic. Due to the generosity of the County of San Diego, ProduceGood, Feeding San Diego, Guild Mortgage and Mission Federal Credit Union, the Urban Corps of San Diego has received funding to host a series of food drives that will allow particpants to receive food and additional supplies for themselves and their families at no cost.
“The pandemic has shown us the inequities that exist, and it was important for us to help those in our community who need support,” said Chair Nathan Fletcher, San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “Urban Corps is putting the funds to good use with its food drives.”
Many program participants receive CalFresh, CalWorks, and/or other services through public assistance programs; however, some students continue to experience food insecurity and difficulty making ends meet.
“The pandemic has negatively impacted many of our Corpsmembers,” said Kyle Kennedy, CEO. “Through these food distribution events, we can ease the burden of some of our county’s most vulnerable individuals by providing supplies for healthy meals that everyone should have access to.”
As a certified local conservation corps, Urban Corps’ mission is to provide at-risk young adults, between the ages of 18 and 26, a second chance to earn their high school diplomas, while gaining work experience within their local communities. The program provides skills training, case management support, career counseling and job placement opportunities.
