San Diego CA— San Diego-based American Council on Exercise experts will convene Friday, April 23, to discuss the importance of fitness and brain health for older adults. This discussion features ACE’s Director of Science and Research Sabrena Jo, Pacific Neuroscience Institute Brain Health Coach Ryan Glatt and ACE-certified personal trainer and founder of Incremental Fitness Damien Joyner. Moderated by ACE’s Lauren Shroyer, Senior Director of Product Development, the discussion will center around senior fitness, the benefits of exercise for older adults and how different types of exercise can improve brain health.
According to the United Health Foundation:
- Only about 32% of women and 25% of men over 65 are in fair or better health
- Physical inactivity can increase the risk of a number of health problems like
- Cardiovascular disease and hypertension
- Cancer
- Obesity and development and diabetes
- Premature death
- Increasing physical activity, especially from an absence, has been found to reduce mortality from any cause and prevent or delay the onset of many chronic diseases.
- The CDC suggests that adults over 65 get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity every week.
The population of adults 65 years and older is a rapidly growing demographic, as the Baby Boomer population continues to age. Aging comes with its own set of health risks – like cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancer and premature death – and these risks have only been compounded with the ongoing pandemic. Older adults are at the highest risk for severe illness if infected COVID-19.
Physical activity is an important part of healthy aging, since a sedentary lifestyle or physical inactivity puts individuals at a higher risk of health problems. However, even a moderate increase in physical activity can seriously reduce risk of health issues associated with aging, which is why ACE is committed to providing training and resources around senior health and fitness.
Last year, the organization released a senior-centric fitness specialist program in an effort to provide professionals with the tools and training to help older adults gain strength, ward off muscle deterioration and reduce instances of inactivity-related disease and cognitive decline. This discussion will dive into this research and explore specifically how exercise benefits brain and body health.
