San Diego CA— The San Diego American Indian Health Center (SDAIHC) will unveil a large, outdoor community art display at its San Diego facility designed to share Native American culture with the community. The canvas artwork, which will be affixed to the exterior of the building, was designed by Larry Edmonds, a Youth Program Coordinator at SDAIHC. The installation’s panels represent traditional American Indian ceremonies. The first depicts a Gourd Dancer modeled after the 2016 American Indian Heritage Month Local Hero Randy Edmonds. The second depicts Monica Jacome, a Jingle Dancer and Associate Teacher at San Diego’s Neighborhood House Association.
The dedication takes place Thursday, June 25, 2020, at SDAIHC, 2630 First Ave., San Diego, CA 92103. The program begins at 4:15 p.m. with Tim Redbird/Red Warrior Drumming. The program continues with welcome remarks by SDAIHC Board Chair Paula Brim and other attending board members, comments by CEO Kevin M. LaChapelle, Bird Songs by Jake and Dakota Jacome, and the introduction of Randy Edmonds. The program ends at 5:40 p.m., and the banners will be illuminated for evening viewing.
“Larry Edmonds honors us with his amazing talent and passion for his Native American Culture,” said Kevin M. LaChapelle, CEO of the San Diego American Indian Health Center. “He is a talented graphic artist as well as a youth program services coordinator at SDAIHC and a full-blooded Native American Indian from the Kiowa/Caddo tribe of Oklahoma who works daily to share his traditions with Urban Indian youth. We are proud to display these beautiful and poignant artworks at our health center so the community can share in the joy of the American Indian heritage, and as always, we are open to all San Diegans in need.”
