Carlsbad CA— Carlsbad City Council Member Cori Schumacher has won the special election for District 1, which includes the northwest part of the city and two of Carlsbad’s oldest neighborhoods. The seat became vacant last October with the resignation of Barbara Hamilton. Schumacher will fulfill the remainder of the term, which ends in November 2022.
“It’s never been more clear how essential it is to have transparent, proactive leadership committed to putting our community’s safety and well-being first,” said Schumacher. “I’m honored Carlsbad’s District 1 continues to place their trust in the transformative work we are doing. We’re in this together!”
According to the County of San Diego Registrar of Voters, 8,896 residents voted during the special election, a turnout of approximately 54%. The results are as follows:
Cori Schumacher
4,261 votes (47.90%)
Tracy Carmichael
3,493 votes (39.26%)
Simon Angel
1,142 votes (12.84%)
The Registrar of Voters certified the results of Carlsbad’s March 3 special election on April 2. Schumacher will be sworn in during the April 7 City Council meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, Carlsbad’s City Council meetings are virtual, not in person, but they continue to be broadcasted live on the city’s cable channel and livestreamed on the city’s website.
All of the election results from March 3 are available at sdvote.com.
The City of Carlsbad is transitioning to electing City Council members by district, with District 1 and District 3 the first to be filled in 2018. The two other City Council seats are at large, meaning voters from throughout the city elected those City Council members. The terms for both at large seats end in November 2020, when voters in District 2 and District 4 will each elect a City Council member.
Schumacher will vacate her at large seat when she is sworn into the District 1 seat, leaving a vacancy on the City Council. Under the Carlsbad Municipal Code, the City Council may fill a vacancy by appointment or a special election.
