San Marcos CA— The Lowrider Experience being held September 21, 2019, 10:00am-3:00pm in the CSUSM Forum Plaza, is a grassroots community event that was established by Sergeant Herman Hernandez, a University Police Department Sergeant and member of Slowlane Familia Car Club (he owns a lowrider as well) and Celia Martinez (in representation of the Latino Association of Faculty & Staff aka LAFS.)
It is collaborative event that is intended to unite the CSUSM Community, including the University Police Department, and our surrounding communities in a gathering to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be spotlighting the Lowrider Culture, which traditionally reflects a great part of the Mexican Culture.
Organizers of the Lowrider Experience strive to foster a culture where our University Police Department interacts with its community in a non-enforcement environment. This will strengthen community relations among LAFS, the UPD and other public organizations. Establishing valuable relationships among various organizations will increase our quality of life, which will in turn produce a safer community for generations of community leaders, artists and entrepreneurs, while at the same time bringing awareness and respect for time – honored cultural traditions of lowriding.
This year the committee is made up members from different CSUSM departments – Kellogg Library, Early Outreach & Admissions, Commuter Services & Facility Services. Because the University Police Department is a main player in the event, Lieutenant Jesus Flores is also a main player on the committee. Furthermore, Slowlane Familia Car Club Member, Marco Lara is the contact with the different lowrider owners in the community.
Again, the event will run from 10am – 3pm on the CSUSM Forum Plaza on Saturday, September 21st. There will be a resource fair that will include activities for children (including face painting), K9 demos, live entertainment, food trucks, cultural vendors and a non-hosted beer garden for guests 21+. This is the 4th year that the group has hosted the event and have always been more than welcomed by CSU San Marcos the surrounding community.
