La Jolla CA— The Salk Institute will open its doors to the public on Saturday, October 27, for the fifth Explore Salk, the Institute’s free community open house. This year’s event includes family-friendly activities; talks by Salk scientists who study plant biology, cancer and neuroscience; as well as opportunities for self-guided tours of the Institute’s iconic architecture. The keynote will be by circadian scientist Satchin Panda, author of the popular new book The Circadian Code: Lose Weight, Supercharge Your Energy, and Transform Your Health from Morning to Midnight.
There will also be a film screening of The Shot Felt Round the World, followed by a Q&A with Salk Professor Emeritus Walter Eckhart and Jonathan Salk, the youngest son of Salk Institute founder Jonas Salk, who developed the first safe and effective polio vaccine.
Hands-on experiments for kids of all ages will be hosted by Salk’s Education Outreach program and the San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum Mobile Exhibit. Children are also encouraged to dress up as their favorite scientist or come in costume to enjoy some daytime trick-or-treating.
