Regional Recognition for School District Innovator
Oceanside CA— Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) Deputy Superintendent Reginald Thompkins was named the Curriculum and Instruction Administrator of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) Region 18.
Nearly 1,400 educational leaders belong to ACSA Region 18, which encompasses San Diego and Imperial Counties. Their mission is to support California’s educational leaders, to ensure all children have the essential skills and knowledge needed to excel, and to champion public education.
“Mr. Thompkins has mentored our principals and administrators to be even better instructional leaders,” said OUSD Board of Education President Ann Corwin. “Learning is the central theme in all that he does and doing what is right for students is paramount in all his decisions.”
Thompkins serves as the districts second-in-command as well as directly supervising and coordinating the daily activities of the K-12 Curriculum and Instruction, Special Education, and Educational Support Services departments. He is responsible for long-range and daily strategic planning for more than 18,500 students and families, approximately 2,100 employees, 23 schools, and annual budget of $220 million. He has more than 25 years of experience in education including serving as a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and basketball coach.
“What an honor to receive this award,” said Thompkins. “My true award is working with such a high caliber of teachers and administrators whose sole focus is the success of students.”
Thompkins will receive his award at the annual Honoring Our Own dinner on April 27. As the Region 18 winner, he has been submitted as a finalist to the state ACSA Awards Committee in the same category. The statewide awards will be announced in March.
