An opportunity for community leaders and students to tag butterflies and learn about the importance of pollinators

Encinitas CA— Butterfly Farms, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Resource Conservation District of Greater San Diego County, will host an educational monarch butterfly tagging experience in Encinitas, Calif. between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on October 19, 2017. Butterfly Farms is a nonprofit focused on conserving local butterflies and pollinators.
Local elected officials are invited to participate in this event to learn more about pollinators and what their constituents can do to help them in San Diego County. Also invited are two classes from Capri Elementary School. Participants will gain knowledge of monarch butterflies in the West, learn how to tag the butterflies and have an opportunity re-pot milkweed, which is the host plant for monarch butterflies. Although local monarch butterfly migration patterns in Southern California are still relatively unknown, tagging provides important data for understanding the movement of monarch butterflies and helps shape management practices for recovering population numbers.
Declines in the number of monarch butterflies and other pollinator populations have profound impacts on our ecosystem. Many food-producing plants, as well as backyard gardens, are dependent on the transfer of pollen via these insects. This event, hosted by Butterfly Farms, will provide information and guidance for local individuals interested in helping monarchs, pollinators and the local ecosystem in San Diego County. Everyone can play a part in helping pollinators.
