San Diego County CA— The Carlsbad Lancers got off to 3-0 start then dropped two straight before ending the losing skid with a 31-20 win over Oceanside, Friday night.
The Lancers struck first when Carlsbad QB, Troy Bloomquist hit senior TE, Cameron Thomas for a touchdown on the opening drive. They added three more on Shyan Rader’s 27-yard field goal in the second quarter. After taking over on downs at midfield with 8.1 seconds left in the half, the Lancers were poised to take a 10-0 lead into intermission.
Instead of taking a knee to end the half, the Lancers lined up to take one last shot at the end zone. After the snap, Troy Bloomquist had to scramble when pressure from the Oceanside defense forced him out of the pocket. Pirate LB Johnny Egler stripped the ball from Bloomquist which was recovered and returned, by Oceanside, for a TD to pull within three.
Junior RB, Tony Torres scored twice for the Lancers in the second half on rushes of 1 yard and another of 45 yards. Carlsbad’s Jacob “Asa” Turner added a pick 6 to round out the Carlsbad scoring. The Lancer defense held the Pirate offense scoreless through three and a half quarters.
With the win, Carlsbad improves to 4-2, 1-2 in league play and will host San Marcos (5-1 (2-1)), which lost at home to Torrey Pines (4-2 (1-1)), 38-12.
The Pirates drop to 2-4 (0-3) and travel to Torrey Pines next Friday.
