Oceanside CA— Learning Is For Everyone (LIFE) is an organization designed especially for the seniors in North San Diego County and meets most Friday afternoons in the John MacDonald Boardroom on MiraCosta Oceanside Campus located 1 Barnard Dr. LIFE also meets most Friday afternoons at MiraCosta College’s San Elijo campus located 3333 Manchester Avenue, Cardiff.
LIFE offers discussion groups and guest speakers and is a wonderful way to stay engaged through learning. Below is a schedule of events for September 2017
Oceanside Campus
Friday, September 15
1:00 p.m. Three Years a Teacher presented by Elliot Powell, San Marcos Middle School After a 26-year Naval career, including the command of warships and directing operations in the White House Situation Room, Mr. Powell will talk about his “second calling” – teaching at a middle school.
2:30 p.m. XQ High School of the Future presented by M. Doyle, A. Barela, C. Gastauer,Vista Unified School Dist. Learn how Vista High became one of ten U.S. Schools to win a five-year, $10 million grant to rethink high school, as the team describes their journey as an XQ Super School.
Friday, September 22
1:00 p.m. MiraCosta Theatre Production: Waiting for Lefty presented by Eric Bishop, MiraCosta faculty, and students One of the most celebrated and significant plays of American theatre is set in the Depression and deals with the cynical exploitation of the working classes. It became a symbol of its time.
2:30 p.m. Power of Art to Transform Community presented by Maria Mingalone, Oceanside Museum of Art Director Maria Mingalone will lead us on a virtual tour of the Museum’s programs and how they contribute to the social fabric of Oceanside and the larger community.

Lecture: Hate Crimes. Professor Sean Davis, M.A, Sociology, will discuss the sociological understandings of hate crimes, some of the social factors involved in why they occur, and why people sometimes resort to this form of expression.
Friday, September 22

Lecture: Fake News: The Threat to Democracy in the Age of Trump. Mark Sauer, longtime San Diego journalist and host of KBPS Roundtable, will talk about “fake news,” identifying the term’s
origins and explaining how its usage threatens the very core of our democracy by undermining the legitimacy of honest and accurate journalism.

Documentary Film: Cuba’s Secret Side, English and Spanish with English subtitles, 2013, 1 hr., 34 min. No rating. Adventure filmmaker and author Karin Muller spent months hitchhiking around Cuba – living with fishermen and farmers, a Santeria priestess and country doctors. She filmed undercover on a tourist visa and Swiss passport to get beyond the propaganda and rhetoric to capture the true character of the Cuban people.
